The Comparative Guide to Nutritional Supplements is a consumer-friendly insight into the current science in nutrition & health, which offers consumers assistance in navigating the minefield of supplements & brands. It explains the functions of supplements & compares over 200 supplements from more than 70 brands such as Blackmores, Centrum, Herron, Natures Own & USANA. Many well known supermarket & pharmacy brands have come out at the bottom of the list. USANA is the only brand that scored a full five-star rating.
Some of the Comparisons
Here we’ve selected three major brands & made a comparison for you.
- Centrum, complete from A to Z
- Blackmore’s Women’s Vitality Multi
- Swiss Women’s Ultivite
- USANA
- Why not add “Your brand” here & compare it
There is a “danger zone” in supplementation for Vitamin A or retinol. It is toxic as it accumulates in the body. Vitamin A should be in the form of betacarotene which allows the body to convert the betacarotene to Vitamin A as it requires it. Centrum – a huge seller – contains Vitamin A in the toxic form.
Iron is also toxic & can be obtained from many sources of food. Iron is present in Centrum, Blackmores Multivitamin for Women and Swiss Women’s Ultivite.

What to Look for when Choosing Quality Nutritional Supplements
1) Avoid once-a-day formulations:
You simply cannot pack enough into one tablet a day to provide effective dosages for most of the nutrients.
2) Look for supplements that contain the natural form of vitamin E (d-alpha tocopherol):
Synthetic vitamin E is not as effective as the natural form of vitamin E
3) Look for supplements that contain their minerals in chelated form:
Many inexpensive supplements provide their minerals as simple salts (eg: magnesium carbonate). However, minerals joined to amino acids or organic acids (generally called chelated minerals) are better absorbed & therefore more bioavailable to your cells.
4) Avoid supplements containing high levels of preformed vitamin A or retinol:
High levels of pre-formed vitamin A can lead to cumulative toxicity; for women who become oregnant, levels above 10,000 IU/day (3 mg/day) can lead to foetal deformity. Supplement instead with betacarotene, which is converted safely to vitamin A as the body needs it.
5) Avoid supplements that contain high levels of iron:
Iron can accumulate in fatty tissues to toxic levels – particularly for men, who have no way of eliminating excess iron from the body; it is safer to take iron through the food you eat; rich sources are red meats & many vegetables, such as spinach, lentils & asparagus. If you must supplement with iron, do so about an hour before or after you take other minerals, as iron interferes with their absorption.
6) Look for supplements that contain the full spectrum of vitamins, minerals & antioxidants:
Supplements work best when they work together; It is far better to take a broad spectrum supplement with adequate levels of nutrients than to take your supplements a-la-carte (ie: a little of this, a little of that). In the Consumer’s Guide there are 47 different nutrients & nutrient categories.
